Gas and Constipation During Pregnancy

Gas and constipation during pregnancy are common problems many mothers-to-be experience, particularly in the first trimester. Rising levels of pregnancy hormones (progesterone) can relax the muscles in the bowel, causing constipation.

There are many strategies to manage constipation during pregnancy, these include:

  •  Choose foods that are rich in fibre: vegetables, fruit, whole-grain cereals and unrefined starches (pasta, rice, etc.)
  •  Snack on some prunes or dried fruit
  •  Do a little exercise: at least 30 minutes of walking every day
  •  Drink plenty of water – about 2.3 litres per day
  •  If needed, your doctor may advise medication

Consult your healthcare professional for safe and effective remedies or dietary supplements tailored to your specific needs. These simple strategies may help alleviate discomfort so you can enjoy a more comfortable journey towards motherhood.
